FEATURED POST

Purists might argue that using a giant hammer removes the "art" of the suffering. However, anyone who has played the mod knows that it comes with its own set of frustrations. Because the hammer is so huge, it often gets stuck in tight spaces (like the chimney at the start or the narrow tunnels later in the game).

Navigating tight corridors with an comically oversized hammer requires a surprising amount of skill. You have to relearn the physics engine, figuring out how to drag the massive tool behind you without launching yourself into the void. It’s not necessarily "Easy Mode"—it’s just "Chaos Mode."

Assuming you have the Steam version of Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy:

  • Back up the original file:

  • Install the mod:

  • Launch the game:

  • Troubleshooting: If the game crashes on startup, delete the new files and restore your backup. Also, verify your game files via Steam (Properties → Local Files → Verify integrity).

Most mods for Getting Over It are file replacements. You do not need a special installer, but you will need software capable of unzipping files (like WinRAR or 7-Zip).

  • Launch the Game: Run the game as normal. If installed correctly, you should see the new hammer model immediately.
  • Open the mod’s .cfg file (generated after first launch with the mod installed) using Notepad. You can adjust:

Run Getting Over It. You should see a console window briefly (BepInEx) and then the game starts. Your hammer should now be hilariously oversized. Try climbing the first rock – you’ll notice the difference immediately.

Important Disclaimer: Getting Over It is a Unity-based game. Installing mods requires replacing game files or using a mod loader. Always scan downloaded files with an antivirus program and back up your original game files before installing anything.

Currently, the most popular versions of the "Big Hammer Mod" (and variants like the "Long Hammer Mod") are hosted by the community on sites like GameBanana or shared via Discord servers and YouTube tutorial links.

Once you have the mod running, the game transforms. The initial "Hardest Climb" becomes a joke – you can fling yourself up the first orange tree in two swings. However, the mod introduces new challenges:

For game mods, it is vital to download from reputable sources to avoid malware. The two most trusted platforms for Getting Over It mods are GameBanana and Nexus Mods.

  • Nexus Mods: A large modding community that often hosts utility tools for the game.
  • Note: Because mods are fan-made, specific "Big Hammer" files may be updated or removed over time. Always check the upload date and user comments on the download page to ensure it is the version you want.
