You cannot buy any new digital games on Wii U. Your only legal sources are pre-owned physical discs and any downloads that came pre-installed on a used console (if the previous owner’s account is still on it – but do not delete it). For most digital exclusives, the Switch has become the modern home.

If you have a specific question about re-downloading a game you already bought, check Nintendo’s support site or call their helpline. They can still help with account recovery for legacy purchases.

While the official Wii U eShop storefront was discontinued for new purchases on March 27, 2023

, the legacy of its digital library remains a defining part of the console's history. For existing owners, previously purchased titles can still be re-downloaded, and software updates remain available for the foreseeable future. Digital-Only Exclusives and Notable Titles

The Wii U eShop sold Virtual Console games from NES, SNES, N64, GBA, DS, and more. These are download games too.

Despite these successes, the Wii U faced significant challenges in the market, including competition from Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One. The console's user base grew slowly, and the digital library, although diverse and rich, couldn't compensate for the overall lack of third-party support and major franchise games.

However, the experience and insights gained from the Wii U era significantly influenced Nintendo's approach to digital distribution on its subsequent console, the Nintendo Switch. The Switch eShop, launched in 2017, built upon the foundations laid by the Wii U eShop, offering a more streamlined experience, a wider selection of games, and robust support for indie developers.
