Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars, the film was a passion project for Pixar’s Andrew Stanton. However, Disney’s marketing team famously botched the campaign. They removed "Mars" from the title, made vague trailers that hid the epic scale, and assumed audiences already knew the IP.
Upon release in March 2012, the film grossed only $284 million worldwide against a $350 million production and marketing budget. Disney took a historic write-down. Within weeks, all plans for a trilogy—which would have adapted The Gods of Mars and The Warlord of Mars—were incinerated.
