The post-patch cult following of Alissa and the Have-nots Cavern is largely due to -Toritora-'s engagement with the community. In the v1.1 patch notes, they wrote:

"You complained the game was too sad. So we made it sadder, but we gave you a button to pet a cave rat. You are welcome."

That petting mechanic is real. In the southeast corner of level three, there is a rat called "Mr. Nibs." If you share your last ration with him, he will guide you through the dark for five rooms. The original version of the game (v1.0) was a short, two-hour experience. Alissa would fall through a crack in her expensive porcelain bathtub and land in a vast, dripping cave system where the inhabitants are shadowy figures with missing limbs, broken toys, and currencies made of rusted nails.
