This mode reverts the damage scaling to that of v96 (infamously difficult), removes checkpoint pillars, and forces permadeath unless you sacrifice a high-tier Yokai shard on each floor. Speedrunners consider the Legacy mode leaderboard (which only exists in the r1 exclusive build) to be the true test of mastery.
