The drama is a semi-fictionalized retelling of the life of Jumong (later known as King Dongmyeong), the founder of the ancient Korean kingdom of Goguryeo.

Born as the son of Prince Haemosu (a legendary figure from Buyeo) and Lady Yuhwa, Jumong faces a life of constant danger. He is raised in the royal court of King Geumwa of Buyeo, who sees him as a threat to his own sons. Despite being ridiculed for his poor archery skills (the name "Jumong" means "expert archer"), he secretly possesses immense potential and a kind heart.

Driven by the prophecy that he will establish a new nation, Jumong embarks on a journey filled with political intrigue, betrayal, war, and love. Alongside his loyal comrades (the "Ohyang Warriors"), his love interest Soseono (a shrewd and ambitious businesswoman who later becomes the matriarch of Baekje), and his rival Daeso (King Geumwa’s jealous son), Jumong fights to unite the scattered tribes of Jolbon and fulfill his destiny to build a great empire.
