Before the advent of television and the internet, cinema was Tamil Nadu’s primary mass medium. Within that medium, the song sequence was its lifeblood. No star exploited this format as effectively as M.G. Ramachandran (1917–1987). Unlike contemporary heroes, MGR’s songs were rarely romantic interludes.
