About the Book: Sunan al-Darimi is a collection of Hadith compiled by Imam al-Darimi (d. 869 CE). It is highly regarded by scholars, though it is sometimes considered the "Sixth" of the Six Books, usually taking a rank just below the four famous Sunans (Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Nasai, and Ibn Majah). It is known for containing many beneficial chains of narration and chapters on faith and manners.

Sunan Darimi contains over 3,400 Hadith. While many overlap with the Six Books, al-Darimi preserved several chains and textual variants (mutun) that were abandoned by later compilers. For example, he includes detailed narrations about the Fiqh of the early scholars of Khorasan that you cannot find elsewhere.

Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Darimi narrated to us: [Chain] … From Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "Verily, actions are only by intentions. And for every person is what he intended. So whoever emigrated for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, then his emigration is for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever emigrated for worldly gain or a woman to marry, then his emigration is to that which he emigrated."

(This Hadith is also in Bukhari & Muslim, but al-Darimi places it specifically in the chapter on "Sincerity in Seeking Knowledge," giving it a unique jurisprudential slant).

Hadith 2: On the Etiquette of Disagreement (Book of Knowledge) Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Darimi narrated to us:

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: "If the scholars are the protectors of the Ummah, and the rulers are the shepherds of the Ummah, then do not spoil the Ummah by obeying the rulers over the scholars."

(This narration is Mawquf (stopping at Ibn Mas'ud) and is a classic example of how al-Darimi preserved the statements of the Companions' students—a feature often missing from later Sunan works).
