Warning: Avoid illegal scanlation sites. They often mistranslate the nuanced confession dialogue, changing the meaning of Shinobu’s “I don’t want to be your friend” to a generic “I like you,” which loses the edge of ultimatum present in the original Japanese.
Suki Desu Suzuki-kun!! Chapter 72 is a solid entry that focuses on emotional resolution rather than high-stakes drama. It gives the characters—and the readers—a chance to breathe after the chaos of the trip.
However, shoujo manga fans know that peace never lasts long. With Chihiro’s hidden feelings bubbling up and the complexities of high school relationships, the road to a happy ending is still fraught with obstacles.
Score: 4/5 Blushing Shinobus

While shoujo manga often focuses on the female protagonist's emotional journey, Chapter 72 is Hikaru Suzuki’s chapter. This is his turning point.
We get a rare glimpse inside Hikaru’s psyche. Page 6 features a silent, three-panel sequence of his hands shaking. He reaches for his sketchbook. For the first time, we see his drawings not as exquisite art, but as angst-ridden confessionals. He flips through pages—all of them are Sayaka. Sayaka laughing, Sayaka running track, Sayaka yelling at him, Sayaka sleeping in class. The details are staggering: a single tear rolls down his cheek and lands on a drawing, smudging her face. This is the moment of catharsis for Hikaru’s character. The boy who could never say "I love you" realizes that his art has been saying it for him all along. The panel composition is pure genius: a close-up of his eye widening, then a sharp cut to his feet as he suddenly bolts out the door.
To fully appreciate the magnitude of Chapter 72, we must re-establish the emotional fault lines. For the uninitiated, Suki Desu Suzuki-kun!! follows two parallel love stories that are deeply intertwined.
The first is the "Sunny" couple: Chihiro (a sweet, slightly timid girl who loves baking) and Shinpei Suzuki (the charismatic, popular "prince" of the school who is secretly a former child actor). Their relationship is a classic shoujo "opposites attract," built on Shinpei’s genuine admiration for Chihiro’s earnestness.
The second, and often considered the more stormy and compelling couple, is Sayaka Honoka (Chihiro’s best friend, a strong-willed and athletic girl) and Hikaru Suzuki (Shinpei’s younger twin brother, a cold, mysterious, and incredibly talented artist). As of this writing, Suki Desu Suzuki-kun is
For dozens of chapters, the twins and their respective love interests have danced around their feelings. While Shinpei and Chihiro eventually confess and form a sweet, stable couple, the real tension has always simmered between Sayaka and Hikaru. Hikaru, suffering from past trauma and a deep-seated fear of vulnerability, has repeatedly pushed Sayaka away, despite their undeniable chemistry. Chapter 71 ended on a brutal cliffhanger: Sayaka, after pouring her heart out, decided to finally walk away from Hikaru for good, believing he would never love her back.
Chapter 72 picks up exactly where the previous chapter left off: with a rain-soaked confession. Unlike the typical shoujo trope where confessions are interrupted by a convenient bus or a falling object, Ikeyamada lets this one land—but not without a twist.
The chapter opens with Chihiro standing frozen in the school courtyard. The rain has stopped, but the emotional downpour is just beginning. Shinobu Suzuki (the "cool, quiet" Suzuki) has just admitted that he “might like her more than a friend.” However, the camera—or rather, the panel—pans to the left to reveal Hikaru (the energetic, popular Suzuki) hiding behind a pillar, having overheard everything.
Often titled in fan scans as "The Sound of Your Heart" or "Breaking Point," Chapter 72 opens not with a bang, but with a deafening silence. The first panel is a wide shot of the school’s art room at dusk. The golden hour light casts long shadows. Hikaru is alone, standing in front of a canvas covered by a white sheet. He is utterly still. Warning: Avoid illegal scanlation sites
The narrative follows Sayaka. She is at the school’s rooftop—their special place. She isn't crying; instead, she displays a quiet, devastating resignation. She takes off the hair ribbon Hikaru once gave her (a callback to an early chapter) and holds it over the edge, ready to let it go. This act is symbolic: she is releasing her hope, her love, and her connection to him.
The chapter then masterfully cuts between three locations: Hikaru in the art room, Sayaka on the rooftop, and Chihiro & Shinpei walking home, discussing their friends’ silent battle.
