The finale of Shinsekai Yori is famously devastating. After the Fiend dies, the human army counter-attacks the Queerats. Squealer is captured. In the final trial, he stands before the human Ethics Committee, screaming in broken language: "We are human! We are the same!"
Are the Queerats monsters because they are biologically different, or because society has made them monsters? Squealer is more "human" (loving, vengeful, strategic) than most psychic humans. The show forces us to realize that "humanity" is a behavior, not a species.
