Sankranthi Release Telugu Movies 2023
Star: Thalapathy Vijay Director: Vamshi Paidipally
This film was the third unofficial heavyweight. A family drama about a younger son fixing a broken business family, Vaarasudu relied heavily on Vijay’s star power. In Telugu states, it performed extremely well in urban centers (Hyderabad, Vizag) but slightly underperformed in rural areas compared to Veera Simha Reddy.
Director: Prasanth Kumar Dimmala
Starring: Santosh Sobhan, Priya Bhavani Shankar
OTT release only (direct-to-digital on Aha Video)
A light-hearted urban rom-com about a young couple dealing with post-marriage adjustments. Decent performances, relatable moments, but no theatrical impact due to Sankranthi biggies. Sankranthi Release Telugu Movies 2023
Hit – Grossed over ₹130+ crore worldwide. Excellent openings, but mixed word-of-mouth.
Star: Ajith Kumar Director: H. Vinoth
Thunivu (meaning "Daredevil") was a heist-action thriller. Ajith’s negative/grey-shaded character was a refreshing change. However, in the Telugu market, it struggled for screens due to the three local releases. It found a niche audience but did not create an impact comparable to Vaarasudu. Star: Thalapathy Vijay Director: Vamshi Paidipally This film
The Sankranthi festival is more than just a harvest celebration in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana; it is the holy grail of Tollywood box office releases. For decades, producers have vied for these festive dates, believing that the holiday spirit brings families to theaters in droves.
2023 was no exception. In fact, it was one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory, pitting Massive Stars against Massive Budgets. If you missed the theatrical rush or want a recap of the films that defined the Telugu box office early this year, here is your ultimate guide to the Sankranthi Release Telugu Movies 2023.
Director: Murali Kishor Abburu Cast: Kirr Abbavaram, Kashmira Pardeshi Hit – Grossed over ₹130+ crore worldwide
The Buzz: A major anomaly of 2023. Initially, the Sankranthi race was supposed to have Vaarasudu (the Telugu dub of Vijay’s Varisu) and Shaakuntalam. However, delays pushed Vinaro Bhagyamu Vishnu Katha (VBVK) into the prime slot as a "young hero" alternative to the two senior stars.
The Plot: A middle-class man’s life turns upside down when he receives a mysterious audio cassette that seems to predict his future—if he follows it, success; if he ignores it, disaster.
Box Office Verdict: Disaster Unfortunately, the film was crushed by the Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna juggernauts. Poor promotions and lackluster word-of-mouth led to theaters vacating the film within the first weekend.
⭐⭐⭐½ (3.5/5) – Entertaining family mass entertainer. Works best for Chiru fans and families during Sankranthi.
