Visually, Saint Seiya is a product of its time, but it has aged with a unique charm. The character designs are iconic—the "bishonen" (pretty boy) aesthetic was revolutionary for action anime and influenced countless series that followed. The Cloths (armors) are intricately designed, looking like wearable sculptures.

The animation, by Toei Animation, fluctuates. In key battles, particularly during the Sanctuary Arc, the animation is fluid and visceral. However, the series suffers from the 80s tradition of heavy recycling of animation frames (stock footage for attacks). Saint Seiya

Where the show truly shines is the audio. The soundtrack by Seiji Yokoyama is legendary. It uses choral arrangements and orchestral swells that feel like a holy crusade. The Gold Saints are what the Bronze Saints could become if they sacrificed their humanity for duty. The Specters of Hades represent the seduction of nihilism—the desire to erase a painful existence. Seiya and his friends do not just climb a tower; they ascend a ladder of moral compromise, rejecting the cold logic of their elders in favor of messy, painful fraternity.

In 2023, Saint Seiya attempted to break into Hollywood. Directed by Tomasz Bagiński and starring Mackenyu (as Seiya), Famke Janssen, and Sean Bean, the film was a live-action adaptation of the "Sanctuary" arc.

While praised for Mackenyu’s physical performance and the CGI transformation of the Cloths, the film struggled to condense the dense mythology into a 90-minute runtime. It received mixed reviews, highlighting how difficult it is to adapt the spiritual and astronomical concepts of Saint Seiya for a mainstream Western audience.
