Understanding how the license key works technically explains why unauthorized keys are unstable.
Unlike physical NAS hardware, QUTScloud allows "License Roaming." If your ESXi host crashes, you can spin up QUTScloud on a new host and, using QLM, revoke the license from the old (dead) VM and assign it to the new one instantly.
To move a license from one VM to another (e.g., during disaster recovery): qutscloud license key
⚠️ Deactivation without internet access is impossible – the VM must phone home. In such cases, contact QNAP support with proof of purchase.
Critical Warning: If you allow the license to remain expired for more than 30 days, QNAP reserves the right to delete your license file from their server, forcing you to rebuild your RAID configuration from scratch. Always set a calendar reminder for renewal. Understanding how the license key works technically explains
Once you have purchased the key, activation is not as simple as copying and pasting a code into a web UI. Because QutsCloud runs in a headless environment (no physical screen), you must use the command line or the QNAP Find utility.
If you move your QutsCloud VM to a new hypervisor (e.g., VMware to Proxmox), the old license will deactivate. Dashboard → System status may show a warning
Qutscloud is QNAP’s virtualization operating system designed specifically for public cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Alibaba Cloud). It allows you to deploy QNAP’s NAS OS in the cloud to create a feature-rich, cloud-based file server, backup target, or virtualization host.
