This release is a high-efficiency rip of Luca Guadagnino’s highly anticipated romantic drama, Queer (2024). Encoded by the popular release group PSA, this file is tailored for viewers who prioritize a balance between visual fidelity and manageable file sizes.
Based on the filename specifications, this is a WEBRip source, indicating the video was captured or extracted from a streaming service (likely upon its digital debut) rather than a physical disc.
This is the core of the file. x265 is the open-source encoder software that implements the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, also known as H.265.
Comparison to H.264 (AVC):
Why PSA uses x265 exclusively: PSA’s entire philosophy is "small file size, acceptable quality." They target encodes of approximately 1.5GB to 3GB per 2-hour movie. Using H.264, that file would look blocky and macroblocked. Using x265 at 10-bit, they can achieve surprisingly watchable 1080p video at those low bitrates.
The Trade-off: Fine grain (film grain) is the enemy of x265. The encoder tends to smooth over grain to save bits, giving a "waxy" or "plastic" look to skin and textures. For a film like Queer, if shot on grainy 16mm film stock, a PSA encode will destroy the cinematic texture.
I tested the PSA release of Queer on a 65-inch OLED (sitting 8 feet away) and on a 14-inch laptop.
