The season follows Spartacus, a Thracian warrior who defected from the Roman auxiliary army to protect his wife, Sura, from a Roman commander. Captured and sentenced to death, he is instead sold into slavery to Lentulus Batiatus, the owner of a gladiatorial school (ludus) in Capua. Forced to become a gladiator, Spartacus must survive brutal combat, political treachery, and personal betrayal. His primary motivation throughout Season 1 is to earn his freedom and find his wife, but the season ends tragically with her murder by Batiatus, setting the stage for the eventual rebellion.
