The serial number is printed in two places on every 3DS unit:

On the original 2DS (the wedge-shaped model), the primary serial number is on the back, but a secondary, internal verification number exists inside the battery compartment. This is used by repair techs to verify the case hasn't been swapped. The serial number is printed in two places
