During his time in exile and hiding, Stroe’s path crosses with two important characters:
Stroe falls deeply in love with Catinca. However, there is a rival for her affection: Vartic, a cunning and ambitious man who supports the current ruler, Tomșa. The rivalry between Stroe and Vartic is not just romantic; it represents the clash between the old, proud Moldavian nobility (Stroe) and the opportunistic, pragmatic courtiers (Vartic).
Stroe eventually returns to his ancestral estate. He finds his home ruined and his lands confiscated by the new regime.
Unlike abridged versions from the communist era, this new audio edition is unabridged and carefully produced. Listeners get the full 400+ pages, including Sadoveanu’s famous descriptions of Moldavian landscapes, the boyar councils, and the haunting plague scenes. Soft ambient sounds (wind, horses, a crackling fire) are used sparingly, enhancing without distracting. Stroe falls deeply in love with Catinca
