Each bank has its own aluminum cylinder head with four valves per cylinder (24 valves total). The DOHC design means two camshafts per head (intake and exhaust).
Components highlighted in the diagram:
Diagram Insight: The camshaft adjusters are often shown as circular units with oil passages. On the M272, both intake and exhaust camshafts have variable adjustment (on most versions), making the diagram quite busy at the front of the engine.
Components:
Diagram Insight: The water pump’s gasket is often listed as a separate part in the diagram. Do not overlook it when ordering.
Note on Oil Routes: Follow the oil path on a detailed diagram. Oil travels: Pump → Oil Filter (canister on front of engine) → Main gallery → Balance shaft bearings → Crankshaft bearings → Camshafts → Return to pan.
The serpentine belt diagram is actually part of the M272 parts diagram family.
Key parts:
Flip the engine diagram around to the front view, and you’ll see the Timing Chain setup. Unlike the M112 which used a single long chain, the M272 uses three timing chains:
On the diagram, identify the Chain Tensioners and Rails (Guides). These plastic guides become brittle over time. If you are doing a rebuild, these are the "while you're in there" parts that must be replaced.
