Many vintage Matons (particularly electrics like the EG808 or Mastersound models) have been modified. A guitar may have a neck from 1965 and a body from 1970. Serial number searches must distinguish between the number on the neck plate and the number stamped on the body.

Before beginning a digital search, one must physically locate the number. On Maton acoustics, it is almost always located inside the soundhole, stamped on the neck block (the visible wood joint where the neck meets the body). On solid-body electrics (like the MS500 or BB1200), it is typically found on the back of the headstock or the neck plate. Collectors should note that some 1970s Matons stamped numbers so lightly that they are only visible under a bright, raking light.
