If you are still on the fence, here is the checklist of why this series deserves your weekend binge:

The series is an MX Player original.

Verdict for Season 1: If you want smart satire wrapped in a pulp-fiction bow, this is the best Mastram web series experience. It is funny, provocative, and surprisingly heartfelt.

You cannot discuss the Mastram web series best without praising the cast.

Perhaps the most intelligent layer of Mastram is its satirical take on society. The series highlights the irony of a society that publicly shames erotic content but privately consumes it voraciously. Rajaram is treated as a "good boy" by society, while his pseudonym is both revered and reviled. This commentary on human nature elevates the show above mere adult entertainment.

Compare Mastram to shows like XXX or Gandii Baat. Those shows often rely on shock value and unrealistic scenarios. Mastram relies on longing. It understands that the most erotic organ in the human body is the brain. The dialogues, written in chaste Hindustani mixed with local slang, are funnier and sharper than they have any right to be.

Released during the lockdown-induced boom of OTT platforms, Mastram (created by Ashish R. Shukla) is a biographical satire based on the real-life phenomenon of the anonymous Hindi erotic writer who ruled the 90s. Unlike the soft-core films that often carry the "Mastram" label, this web series is a period drama. It is set in the late 90s in a dusty North Indian town, following Rajaram (played brilliantly by Jaideep Ahlawat), a bank employee who dreams of becoming the next Premchand.

When his literary novels get rejected for being "too boring," he accidentally stumbles into the world of sex writing under the pen name "Mastram." The series follows his moral conflict, his rise to infamy, and the hilarious logistical nightmares of printing obscene literature in a conservative society.

To understand the "best" of Mastram, you have to separate the seasons:

Verdict: If you want the "best" experience, watch Season 1 as a standalone tragicomedy. Season 2 is for fans who want more of the universe, but it doesn’t top the original.
