Abstract: This paper examines the transformation of Indonesian entertainment through the lens of popular video content. It traces the evolution from traditional television (sinetron) and film to the dominance of digital platforms like YouTube and TikTok. The analysis focuses on key genres (Pawang, ASMR Makan, Prank, Web Series), the role of local celebrity culture, and the socio-political implications of algorithmic video distribution in the world’s fourth most populous nation.
Indonesian TikTok is distinct. While the West dances to pop remixes, Indonesian viral sounds often come from dangdut remixes, Islamic nasalids (songs), or bizarre voiceovers from local soap operas. The content is aggressive, fast-paced, and deeply community-oriented.
