You go to the Frontech website (frontech.com). You search for “FT 2255 driver.” You find either:

Result: No official Windows 7 driver exists.

Some FT 2255 units use a Sonix SN9C201 or SN9C202 chipset. You can download a driver that works on Windows 7 from third-party archives (be careful).

Installation: Download the ZIP, extract, then in Device Manager → Update driver → Point to the extracted folder.

If the automatic method fails, you can try the manufacturer's site. Note that Frontech organizes drivers by "Model Name" rather than the "FT" number, which can be confusing.

  • Download the driver file (usually a .zip or .rar file).
  • Extract the file: Do not try to run the file directly from the zip folder. Right-click the downloaded folder and select Extract All.
  • Install: Locate the Setup.exe or Install.exe file inside the extracted folder, right-click it, and select Run as Administrator.
  • Use a simple tool like ManyCam (older free version) or the Windows 7 built-in “Windows DVD Maker” (oddly, it can preview webcams). Or just open Skype for Windows 7 (the last version before Microsoft dropped support) and check video settings.

    | Problem | Possible Fix | |--------|---------------| | Driver installation fails with “Device not found” | Unplug webcam, restart installer, plug in only when installer asks | | Image is black, but LED lights up | Another app is using the webcam (close all browser tabs with camera access) | | Driver installs but webcam not in Device Manager | Try different USB port (preferably USB 2.0, not 3.0) | | Windows 7 64-bit rejects driver signature | Use F8 → Disable Driver Signature Enforcement, then install | | Webcam works in AMCap but not in Chrome | Chrome for Windows 7 no longer supports non-UVC webcams – use Firefox ESR or Skype classic | | Microphone not working | Go to Control Panel → Sound → Recording → Set webcam mic as Default Device |

  • When prompted, plug in the Frontech FT 2255 webcam (do not plug it earlier unless instructed).
