The rise of CCStopper is a direct reaction to a broken system. Consider these statistics:
Merchants use "roach motel" billing: easy to check in, impossible to check out. CCStopper is the digital equivalent of walking out the back door.
Privacy.com (free tier gives 12 virtual cards per month). No subscription needed. ccstopper
Most CCStopper solutions rely on Virtual Credit Cards. Services like Privacy.com (in the US), Revolut, or Capital One Eno allow you to generate a unique card number linked to your real account but with strict controls. You can:
When you use a VCC for a free trial, the merchant cannot charge you after the trial ends because the card either has a zero balance or is deactivated. This is the most common form of CCStopper.
You don't need special software. Here is the DIY CCStopper method for any credit card user: Project ID: CYB-2024-CCS-01 Date of Report: October 26,
Step 1: Audit your statements. Go back 90 days. Highlight every recurring charge. Use a highlighter for "wanted" vs "unwanted."
Step 2: Attempt formal cancellation. Email the merchant. Use the subject line: "Immediate cancellation of service - effective today." Save the email and any automated reply.
Step 3: Generate a virtual card. For all future free trials or risky subscriptions, never use your real card number. Use Privacy.com or Revolut. Set the limit to $1 or the exact trial cost. Merchants use "roach motel" billing: easy to check
Step 4: Use "Merchant Locking." If your bank offers it (e.g., Some fintech apps like One or Chime), lock your card specifically to the rogue merchant. The merchant can still see the card is valid, but the authorization will fail.
Step 5: Leverage Regulation E (for bank accounts). If a merchant refuses to stop charging your actual debit card, you have 60 days to dispute the charge under federal law. Tell your bank: "I revoked authorization on X date, but the merchant ignored me." Provide the email from Step 2.
