Tidak seperti puisi era Pujangga Baru atau bahkan puisi mbeling, gaya Sumanjaya sangat kontemporer dan minimalis. Ia menggunakan kata-kata sehari-hari yang dirangkai menjadi pisau bedah emosi. Banyak pembaca yang menangis setelah membaca satu puisinya karena terasa terlalu dekat dengan realita mereka sendiri.
