Year: 1969 | Director: Satyajit Ray A fantasy musical about two simpletons who gain magical powers. It showcases Ray’s versatility; he wrote the screenplay, composed the music, and directed. The "Ghost Dance" sequence is legendary in Indian film history.

Zulfiqar (2016) Srijit Mukherji’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and Antony & Cleopatra. Set against the backdrop of the Bengal chemical fertilizer scam, it features an ensemble cast (Dev, Prosenjit, Parambrata). It is dark, violent, and Shakespearean—the perfect way to end our A-to-Z journey.


Year: 2011 | Director: Srijit Mukherji A milestone in modern Bengali cinema, this neo-noir thriller follows a serial killer leaving clues via poems. It revived the popularity of the intellectual thriller in Kolkata, driven by the late, great actor Prosenjit Chatterjee’s gritty performance.

Year: 1970 | Director: Subodh Mitra Based on the novel by Bhabani Banerjee, this film captures the vanishing landscape of rural Bengal and the deep emotional bonds of family life.

Ritwik Ghatak’s Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960) The partition of Bengal has no greater chronicler than Ritwik Ghatak. This film about a refugee family’s struggle in Kolkata is heartbreaking and powerful. A top historical drama.

Rosogolla (2018) A sweet biographical drama about Nabin Chandra Das, the inventor of the famous Bengali sweet. A feel-good family film.


Rituparno Ghosh’s adaptation of Tagore’s novel. It deals with mistaken identities and the complexity of relationships, wrapped in period aesthetics and soulful music.
